I like to expand my students’ vocabulary by exposing them to a word of the day. Sometimes it’s related to a current event or something that’s going on in the students’ lives. For example, today we have a two hour delay due to the extremely cold wind chill. So our word of the day is frigid. Here are some useful resources for words of the day:
Word Central Student Dictionary – uses Merriam-Webster dictionary. Provides suggestions for correct spelling if student misspells.
Wordsmyth – Provides options for three different levels (Beginner’s, Children’s, and Advance). Includes pronunciation, animation, synonyms, photgraphs, and etymology.
Super Kids Vocabulary Builder – word of the day for various grade levels
